The cultivar known as Skunk #1, or Original Skunk #1, was developed by David Watson (also known as Sam the Skunkman) and is a key genetic component in numerous cannabis strains. Its origins can be traced back to 1970s California and it is said to be a descendant of an Afghani landrace strain crossed with Acapulco Gold and Colombian Gold.
Through careful selection and refinement over many years, Watson was able to create phenotypes with high yields, early flowering times, and dense buds covered in resin. Skunk #1 quickly gained recognition for its suitability for indoor cultivation and even won first place at the inaugural High Times Cannabis Cup in 1988.
